Artist's Comments

I think that at the core of it we all just want to be pretty so that someone...

somewhere...

would just love us.

I'm so excited. I shot last night and this is the first image that I wanted to share with you. Everything you see was done entirely in-camera. Photoshop used only to increase contrast. A big special thanks to Steven who helped me take this closeup shot.. sometimes self-portraits are too frustrating :)

I may be crazy... but at least sometimes the insanity allows me to produce something interesting. There is more to come.. I hope you like it :)

I cant believe youre smiling! At the least, regardless of the mood of this, I would be pissed off about the make up/props you had to wear for this ;)

This is a great shot Katie and its good to see you stepping behind the camera (and in front too..) again :D

I thank god for bitter irony,
The happiness felt through lustful gluttony.
The very things sent to condemn me,
Are the things in life that make me happy.

Holy shit woman. Creep me out. :D

I always enjoy the words you pair with your work. In this case they're so damn true, to the point that they explain most of what we do.

Also, as an afterthought, there's something deeply disturbing about the fact that there is a clean, white smile under all the rot. That and I can't decide if your grin seems simply amused or playful in a "I am about to eat your face" kind of a way. :O_o:

What would the world be like if we tried to be kind as hard as we tried to be beautiful?

Ack! OMG, this really hit a nerve with me. This is exactly how I felt before I got my eczema under control. The worst part of it was that my eczema usually flared up on my face (and still does). I'm sure people with terrible acne feel the same way. I love the title and your little description. That was me exactly.

I'm filled with mixed emotions about the crazy dichotomy you created with your beautiful smile and the stains and peeling "skin." (What did you use for makeup by the way? :)) I can't decide if I should burst out laughing in hysterical giggles because the incongruity is funny or crying because I so often felt like the way you described the image.

When my eczema was bad, I'd get large red puffy patches on my face (that were very painful), especially around my eyes, so I looked like I had raccoon eyes for a long time. They'd crack and peel and weep because they'd never heal. I was always taking one kind of corticosteroid medication or another, but they'd lose potency after awhile and I'd have to use stronger and stronger doses. I also got a terrible rebounding effect where the eczema came back worse after the meds wore off. My life changed when the new immunomodulators came on the market because they had few nasty side effects unlike the corticosteroids. I did develop an alcohol allergy because of the new medication though. :P

Anyway, this is a brilliant image and a very powerful one for me. Of all the images I've seen on dA, this is the that's touched me the most - the image, the title and the description.

Thank you for producing something that expressed my suffering so perfectly.

that's fucking interesting. like the skin peeling away to show the real skin, or the real skin can be peeled away. I like how dynamic it is and so many different perspectives to view

I like this so much, your words touch as deeply as your image does.

Wonderful work on this - dark but pretty at the same time. Did you use the face mask peeling gel? Man I love that stuff :aww:

I. Love. This. Both the image (fantastic contrasts both in light/dark and in content!) and the words. I know that idea so well. Incredible work.
